Process Introduction

Pad printing is a high-precision surface marking process dedicated to ultra-fine miniature graphics on vinyl toys, PVC figures, resin sculptures and wooden crafts.
Its working principle relies on a soft silicone transfer pad to pick up pre-etched patterns from precision steel printing plates, then accurately stamp tiny graphics onto uneven or slightly curved blank toy surfaces. Our pad printing equipment delivers marking precision down to 0.1 mm; each steel plate withstands over 10,000 continuous stamping cycles, with single-color graphic alignment taking only 2–3 seconds per piece.
It is our most reliable mass-production solution for miniature text, micro brand logos, delicate doll facial lines, small decorative icons and serial coding that demand ultra-fine detail accuracy.

Types of Pad Printing 

  1. Single-color Pad Printing: Basic single-tone marking for simple logos, serial numbers and text; fast lead time and low plate cost.
  2. Multi-color Registration Pad Printing: Layered multi-graphic alignment for complex facial features and multi-color brand emblems, matched with dedicated positioning fixture jigs.
  3. Rotary Pad Printing: Custom rotary silicone pad design enables seamless marking on cylindrical curved toy parts such as sculpt limbs and bottle-shaped figures.

Disadvantages & Matching Solutions

Disadvantage 1: Limited maximum printable area; unable to cover large full-surface graphics
Solution: Combine pad printing with auxiliary spray painting, heat transfer printing or water transfer printing. Pad printing handles tiny logo detailing, while large-area coating processes complete full-surface decorative backgrounds.
Disadvantage 2: Poor printing performance on wide arched curved surfaces, deep hollow cavities and narrow recessed gaps
Solution 1: For large curved parts: Switch to rotary pad printing fixtures or heat transfer printing, which evenly wraps broad curved surfaces.
Solution 2: For deep hollow & narrow-gap sculptures: Deploy small-caliber mini silicone pads paired with extended positioning jigs to reach deep recessed areas. If gaps are excessively narrow, replace with hand painting or water decal.
Disadvantage 3: Multi-color graphic production requires repeated positioning & extra stamping steps, extending production cycle time
Solution 1: Deploy custom multi-station pad printing machines with automatic optical positioning sensors to eliminate manual alignment errors and speed up multi-color registration.
Solution 2: Fabricate unified fixed positioning fixture molds for recurring bulk orders to skip repeated measurement before each stamping run.
Solution 3: For high-volume multi-color orders, optimize graphic layout to reduce color layers and shorten production tact time.
Disadvantage 4: Silicone pads wear out after long continuous production, resulting in fuzzy printed edges
Solution: Replace silicone pads regularly based on cycle counts (every 8,000–10,000 stamps). Maintain stock of standard spare silicone pads to avoid production downtime and blurred graphics.

It performs excellently on slightly curved, concave and uneven small toy surfaces.

Can pad printing produce multi-color graphics on toys?
Yes. We fabricate multi-layer etched steel plates and adopt precision positioning fixtures to achieve accurate multi-color overprint registration, with color misalignment controlled within 0.1 mm. That said, pad printing is unsuitable for large solid color blocks. We pair it with screen printing or spray painting to cover wide background base colors instead.

Which toy substrates are compatible with pad printing?
Pad printing boasts broad substrate compatibility, working stably on ABS, PVC, vinyl, resin, wood and rigid hard plush accessories. Clear, durable graphics can be transferred as long as the blank surface is clean, dry and free of oil contamination. Soft highly fluffy plush fabric is not recommended for pad printing, as loose lint sticks to silicone pads and results in blurred, fuzzy printed graphics.

Is the pad printing ink you use safe for kids’ toys?
All pad printing inks we deploy comply with global toy safety standards EN71 and ASTM F963. They contain no lead, cadmium or other toxic heavy metals, and are non-toxic with low odor. After printing, the ink layer fully cures to form strong adhesive coating that resists rubbing and wear. All finished toys undergo strict heavy metal testing prior to shipment to guarantee safe use for infants and young children.
