Spray Painting

Process Introduction

Spray painting is the most widely adopted base surface finishing technique for mass toy manufacturing, covering over 80% of Demeng Toy’s bulk orders for vinyl toys, PVC figures, resin sculptures and wooden crafts.
This process uses compressed-air spray guns to atomize liquid paint into an even fine mist that adheres uniformly to blank toy surfaces. It supports full base coats, layered color gradients, shadow shading and partial decorative detailing. Our automated spray lines deliver a daily throughput of 200–500 finished pieces per line, with a first-pass inspection yield above 95%. Featuring stable high-volume output and flexible color tuning, it serves as the universal standard coloring process for standardized assembly-line mass toy orders.

Types of Spray Painting

  1. Edge Mold Spraying: Custom plastic shielding molds cover assembly edges to create clean, paint-free joint lines on flat plastic toy parts, eliminating over-spray contamination during mass coating.
  2. Clamp Mold Spraying: Custom fixture clamps secure irregular 3D sculpted figures for full multi-sided uniform coating without manual flipping, ideal for resin and vinyl art collectibles.
  3. Large Gun Base Coating: Wide-spray high-flow air guns enable fast full-body base color coverage for large batches, cutting single-piece base coating cycle time by 40%.
  4. Small Gun Fine Gradient & Blush Detailing: Precision micro spray guns produce ultra-fine mist for delicate blush, shadow, fade gradient and facial layered detailing on art toy heads and limbs.

Core Advantages

  1. Ultra-broad material compatibility: Fully works with ABS, PVC, vinyl, resin and solid wood substrates; customized flexible soft ink is available for coloring plush toy accessories.
  2. Diverse customizable surface finishes: Supports high-gloss, semi-gloss, matte and frosted textures, with tailor-made transparent, metallic, pearlescent and solid color paint formulas.
  3. Natural seamless gradient layering: Atomized thin mist creates soft fade gradients, blush and shadow depth effects unachievable via printing processes.
  4. Low-cost rework & flexible correction: Imperfect coated surfaces can be sanded and re-sprayed without damaging toy blanks, effectively lowering overall production scrap rates.
  5. Scalable mass production capacity: Automated conveyor spray lines support round-the-clock continuous operation, perfectly matching high-volume bulk order demands.

Disadvantages & Matching Solutions

Disadvantage 1: Minor batch color deviation from inconsistent manual gun operation Solution: We deploy fixed-position automated robotic spray guns with locked air pressure, paint flow and spray distance parameters. Standard color swatches are produced for every batch for real-time visual comparison to guarantee unified color consistency.

Disadvantage 2: Risk of paint sagging, dripping and orange-peel texture on thick coating areas
Solution 1: Control single-pass paint film thickness strictly below 0.03 mm; adopt thin multi-layer spraying instead of one-time heavy coating.
Solution 2: Equip temperature & humidity constant drying booths to regulate solvent volatilization speed and prevent sagging caused by slow paint drying.
Disadvantage 3: Poor paint penetration & incomplete coverage on deep, narrow recessed gaps of complex sculpted figures
Solution: Fit small-caliber precision micro spray guns that output low-pressure fine mist. Pre-sand tiny recessed blank areas to boost paint adhesion and ensure full coverage of intricate carved details.
Disadvantage 4: Minor over-spray contamination on assembly joint surfaces
Solution: Custom-fit edge shielding molds and fixture clamps for all 3D toy blanks to block paint overflow on pre-assembly connecting edges.

Application Scenarios

  1. Full-body uniform base coating for mass-produced vinyl toy and PVC figure blanks
  2. Custom solid color grading & color matching for IP-licensed collectible art toys
  3. Delicate facial blush, body shadow and soft gradient layered decoration for high-end art figures
  4. Continuous standardized assembly-line mass production for plastic, resin and wooden custom toys
  5. Secondary color touch-up and rework for defective semi-finished colored products

Compatible Materials

  • Fully compatible substrates: ABS, hard PVC, vinyl, solid resin, natural wood
  • Conditionally compatible material: Plush toy fabric. Only coatable with customized flexible soft elastic ink to stop paint cracking after fabric stretching
  • Incompatible material note: Conventional spray paint cannot form stable adhesion on uncoated soft silicone blanks

FAQ

1
What advantages does spray painting offer for mass toy manufacturing?
Spray painting delivers ultra-high production efficiency and broad substrate compatibility, supporting ABS, PVC, vinyl, resin and wooden toy blanks. It creates even full base coats, soft color gradients, layered shadow shading and partial decorative detailing. With consistent large-volume output and low per-unit cost, it serves as our primary base coloring solution for all assembly-line bulk orders at Demeng Toy.
2
Can spray painting achieve matte, glossy and pearlescent finishes simultaneously on one toy?
Yes. We adjust paint formulas and post-spray clear topcoat treatments to produce a full range of surface textures: high-gloss mirror finish, soft matte frosted texture, pearlescent shimmer, metallic luster and vintage weathered worn effects. Multiple different textures can also be combined on a single toy through segmented masking spraying.
3
Will the sprayed coating peel, fade or scratch easily on finished toys?
We adopt toy-grade eco-friendly spray paint with powerful surface adhesion. After full curing and protective topcoat sealing, the paint layer delivers outstanding abrasion resistance, anti-fading and scratch-proof performance. For daily play toys, the coating remains intact through long-term squeezing and rubbing. If enhanced wear resistance is required, we apply an extra thick anti-scratch clear protective top coat.
4
Can spray painting be combined with other coloring processes to add intricate toy details?
Absolutely. Spray painting is mainly used for large-area uniform base color coverage. We pair it with pad printing, UV printing, hand painting and water transfer printing: spray coating lays a consistent base tone, while secondary fine printing techniques add tiny logos, subtle facial gradients, complex graphics and delicate decorative details to create richer depth and visual layering on art toys.
5
Is the spray paint you use safe for children’s toys?
All spray paints we utilize comply with global toy safety standards including ASTM F963 and EN71. The paints are non-toxic, odor-free, lead-free and heavy-metal free. Our spraying workshop operates under fully enclosed dust-free production standards, and all finished toys undergo strict heavy metal and odor testing prior to shipment to guarantee safe use for infants and young kids.
