An FRP outdoor statue is a life size or large scale fiberglass sculpture built for permanent or semi-permanent outdoor installation. FRP stands for fiber reinforced plastic, also called GRP, and is a composite of glass fiber cloth and chop strand mat wetted with polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy resin, with an outer gelcoat for color and UV barrier, an internal steel armature for load, and a base flange for anchoring. The piece is sized from 0.5 m to 12 m plus, single-piece up to about 4 m, segmented with on-site assembly above 4 m.
| Material | Weight at 2 m hero | Service life | Best fit for outdoor statue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiberglass FRP hand lay-up or vacuum infusion with gelcoat and steel armature ⭐ | 80 to 180 kg | 7 to 12 yr repaint cycle, 20 to 30 plus yr structural | Commercial character mascot, theme park hero, mall atrium display, brand mascot, life size cartoon character for theme park and mall, any complex organic shape with full color throughout |
| Cast bronze lost wax or sand cast | 350 to 700 kg | 100 plus yr with periodic patina care | Civic monument, memorial sculpture, fine art gallery, premium prestige project where budget allows 6 to 12 months lead time |
| Stainless steel fabricated and polished | 200 to 500 kg | 30 plus yr low maintenance | Modern abstract sculpture, corporate plaza, contemporary art installation where organic shape is not required |
| Cast stone, GFRC concrete or carved natural stone | 500 to 1500 kg | 50 plus yr | Municipal plaza, classical sculpture, garden ornament, where weight and mass are design intent and budget is tight |
| Cold cast bronze or cast resin indoor grade | 60 to 150 kg | 3 to 8 yr outdoor covered only | Indoor or covered outdoor only, semi-permanent, low budget decorative sculpture, faux bronze or faux stone effect at low cost |
| Process | What it is | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand lay-up | Hand-placed fiberglass cloth and chop strand mat wetted with brush or roller applied resin, layer by layer inside the mold, gelcoat first then laminate then cure at room temperature | Small and medium pieces 0.5 m to 2.5 m, prototype and small batch, complex shape with thick reinforcement, lowest tooling cost | Labor intensive, operator skill dependent, longer cycle time, surface cosmetic controlled by gelcoat not by laminate |
| Spray-up | Chopper gun sprays catalyzed resin plus chopped glass fiber directly into the mold, then rolled to consolidate, faster than hand lay-up for larger surface | Medium pieces 1 m to 3 m, batch production 10 plus pcs, consistent wall thickness across larger surface | Glass content lower than hand lay-up so stiffness is lower, surface cosmetic still controlled by gelcoat, less suited for ultra-fine detail |
| RTM resin transfer molding | Closed mold, dry reinforcement placed inside, low viscosity resin injected under pressure, cured with heat, both mold surfaces are FRP or aluminum | Medium pieces 1 m to 3 m where both surface faces need to be smooth, premium cosmetic, lower emission than open mold | Higher mold cost, mold weight heavier, less design freedom than open mold for undercuts |
| Vacuum infusion VARTM | Dry reinforcement under vacuum bag, resin drawn through the laminate by vacuum, very low void content, high fiber volume fraction | Large pieces 2 m to 6 m where structural performance matters, public art and landmark, marine and structural use | Longer cycle time, bagging consumables, more operator skill, mold must be airtight |
| Filament winding | Continuous glass fiber roving wetted with resin and wound on a rotating mandrel, axisymmetric parts only | Cylindrical or tapered parts, columns, towers, large pipe-shape sculpture, tanks | Only axisymmetric shape, not for character or organic shape |
| Segmented plus on-site assembly ⭐ | Sculpture split into 2 to 8 segments by structural engineering, each segment cast separately with internal flange connection points, crated flat, joined on site with through-bolts and structural adhesive | Pieces over 4 m up to 12 m plus, theme park landmark, municipal public art, anywhere container dimensions or weight limit block single piece | Joints must be designed and concealed, on-site crew needed for first install, additional engineering cost |
| Tier | Project type | MOQ | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public art and one-off sculpture | Single hero piece for civic plaza, museum or private collector | 1 piece | Mold and armature cost amortized over one piece, highest per-piece cost, longest per-piece engineering |
| Theme park chain and franchise mascot | Same character deployed across multiple parks or properties | 5 to 50 pcs | Mold cost amortized across chain, per-piece cost drops sharply, can offer per-park color or logo variant |
| Brand outdoor mascot and pop-up | Brand character deployed across pop-ups, roadshows or retail exterior | 10 to 100 pcs | Often seasonal, sometimes segmented flat-pack for shipping, may share mold across brand sub-line |
| Batch retail and decoration | Restaurant chain, mall chain, garden center batch | 100 plus pcs | Matches site standard MOQ, mold cost amortized across volume, lowest per-piece cost, simplest repeat ordering |
