What is ABS Figure?

An Introduction to ABS Figurines: Materials, Process and Comparison
ABS figures refer to dolls, figurines, or models primarily made from ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic.

Types of ABS Material
ABS materials can be classified into general-purpose ABS, high-flow ABS, electroplating-grade ABS, high-impact ABS, flame-retardant ABS, and more. ABS figures are typically made using general-purpose ABS.

Manufacturing Process: Injection Molding
Like PVC figures, ABS figures are usually produced using injection molding. A very small number of ABS figures may use extrusion molding. ABS injection molding involves injecting molten ABS into a mold cavity to create complex toy parts for mass production. This method is ideal for intricate geometries and ensures consistent quality across figures.

ABS vs. PVC: A Detailed Comparison

Feature

ABS Figure

PVC Figure

Hardness / Texture

Hard, fine texture, similar to plastic building blocks

Soft or flexible, softer to the touch, slightly sticky feel

Structural Detail

Suitable for mechanical parts, sharp edges, snap-fit structures

Suitable for feminine forms, soft lines, hollow large parts

Durability

Impact-resistant, resists deformation, high chemical stability

Strong toughness, generally durable, but may become sticky over time

Production Process

Injection molding (requires large batch sizes)

Injection molding or rotocasting (flexible process)

Surface Finish

Fine painting, high gloss

Easy to color, mostly matte finish

Cost

Higher (expensive mold opening)

Lower (cost-effective)

Typical uses:
ABS is commonly used for joint parts, skeletons, mechanical models, or parts requiring high rigidity.
PVC is often used for human-shaped figures, soft vinyl toys, head sculpts, and other soft parts that facilitate fine expressions and wrinkles.

Disadvantages and Precautions of ABS
Although ABS is tough, it has its limitations:
ABS figures are not suitable for direct painting; a primer should be applied beforehand.
ABS is also very smooth, making it less ideal for extremely fine, intricate details.
While ABS has some flexibility, it may crack under sufficient pressure (rather than bending).
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause ABS figures to fade and become brittle over time.
Even though ABS is known for its toughness, always consider the intended environment of use.

Mixed Use and Selection Advice
ABS is often used for load-bearing parts of a figure, such as legs or bases. When combined with PVC, ABS provides the basic structure of the statue, while PVC handles more complex details or shapes. To ensure no leaning or deformation, most figures are made from a combination of ABS and PVC.

How to Choose?
Choose ABS figurines if you want fine, complex edges or hard, snap-fit assemblies.

Choose PVC figurines if you prefer a soft surface, high cost-effectiveness, and skin-like texture.

Modern high-end figures often mix both materials: the main body uses ABS to maintain shape, while joints or accessories use PVC for flexibility.
