Super Dollfie (SD) refers to the line of articulated ball-jointed dolls launched by the Japanese company VOLKS starting in 1998. The series was developed under the supervision of Akihiro Enku, and "Dollfie" remains a registered trademark of the company. The name "Dollfie" is a portmanteau of "Doll" and "Figure"; coupled with the aspiration that it would represent "the pinnacle of doll craftsmanship," it was officially christened "Super Dollfie." It is renowned for its 1/3 scale and artistic sculpting. Super Dollfie is commonly abbreviated as "SD," and it was the first product of its kind to be officially designated—in its product description—by the term "Ningyo" (meaning "human-form doll"). It achieved such immense popularity across the Asian market that, in the early days, many young people mistakenly referred to all BJDs (Ball-Jointed Dolls) simply as "SD dolls."
