The Grumpy Orange Cat

People often say outdoor sculptures are too "quiet"—stone lions with stern faces, metal ornaments cold and lifeless. We wanted to do something different: create a "chatterbox" by turning the Q - version comic characters that catch everyone's eye while shopping into a life - size fiberglass statue doll.

Our design team scoured social media's meme collections and finally settled on the "Grumpy Orange Cat". Its puffed - up fur and glaring eyes perfectly capture the modern young adult's daily routine of "appearing calm on the outside but going wild on the inside." Selecting the material was a half - month dilemma: regular resin cracks under the sun, and metal is too heavy to move around. In the end, we chose high - toughness fiberglass. It can withstand typhoons and, with specially designed molds, can even mimic the velvety texture of cat fur. The most painstaking part was perfecting the expression. Initially designed with a neutral face, test molds revealed that a "rolling eyes and sticking out tongue" version was far more hilarious. As a result, we adjusted the whiskers' curves five times.
