What Is an FRP Fiberglass Statue?

An FRP (fibreglass-reinforced plastic) statue is a sculpted form built up by laminating glass fibre reinforcement with a thermoset resin (orthophthalic polyester, isophthalic polyester, or vinyl ester) over a sculptor's master, then sealed with a pigmented gelcoat and finished with paint, faux finish or specialty coating. It is the same material family used for boat hulls, truck cabs and architectural cladding — adapted for sculpture.

FRP Fiberglass vs Bronze, Marble, Concrete, Cast Resin & 3D-Printed Sculpture

MaterialWeight (2 m figurative)Relative costFinish rangeOutdoor lifeImpact behaviour
Cast bronze350-500 kg$$$$ (Cire-perdue process, foundry scale)Patina (chemical / applied), polished, gilded50+ yr with periodic patina refreshHard, brittle at thin sections; cracked limbs require re-welding
Carved marble / stone800-1,200 kg$$$$ (master sculptor, transport, install)Polished, honed, bush-hammered100+ yr if sheltered; chips on thermal shockBrittle; chips propagate, very hard to in-situ repair
Cast concrete / GFRC350-450 kg$$ (form-heavy, labour-heavy)Painted, stained, exposed aggregate20-30 yr with re-sealBrittle, prone to crack along form seams
Solid cast resin (polyurethane / epoxy)90-140 kg (no fibre reinforcement)$$ (small parts only)Paint, faux finish, embedded objects5-10 yr; UV yellowing without UV-stable resinBrittle on impact; not recommended for public touch
3D-printed PLA / PETG / resin40-80 kg (thin-wall)$ for small, $$$$ for monumentalRaw print, sanded, paintedPLA biodegrades outdoors; PETG / PU resin 2-5 yrBrittle, layer-line weakness, vandalism-prone
Where FRP is the wrong choice. If the sculpture must be centuries-stable in an unsheltered civic plaza, cast bronze or stone outlasts FRP. If the piece is a small figurine under 30 cm that lives on a shelf, cast resin or 3D print is faster and cheaper. FRP's sweet spot is the 50 cm to 8 m range, especially when shipping, handling or public interaction is in the brief.

FRP Process Options: Hand Layup, Spray-Up, RTM, Vacuum Infusion & Filament Winding

ProcessTooling costSurface qualityBest forLead timeUnit cost tier
Spray-up (chopper gun)$$ (master + chopper rig)Good — slightly higher fibre print-through, requires more surface prepMedium-run figurative work (10-50 pcs), simple geometry35-49 days for 10-50 pcs15-25% lower than hand layup at 30+ pcs
RTM (resin transfer moulding)$$$ (matched metal mould + clamp press)Very good — both faces moulded, lower gelcoat touch-up50-500 pcs edition runs, brand IP series, gallery editions60-90 days including mould build40-60% lower than hand layup at 100+ pcs
Vacuum infusion (VARTM / SCRIMP)$$$ (rigid master + consumable vacuum bagging)Excellent — high fibre volume, void-free, premium structuralLarge structural FRP (over 3 m), high-load installations60-80 days for 5-20 pcsComparable to hand layup; chosen for strength not cost
Filament winding$$$$ (CNC winder, mandrel)Limited to rotationally symmetric formsCylindrical / vase / column sculptures70-100 days mandrel buildLowest unit cost in symmetric form, niche applicability

Most FRP fiberglass statue projects are hand layup. Because sculpture is fundamentally a one-of or short-run form, the per-unit mould cost of RTM or vacuum infusion rarely amortises. We default to hand layup for figurative work and switch to vacuum infusion only when the laminate must meet a structural load rating (overhead suspension, high-traffic touch zones, wind loads over 1.5 kPa).

Custom FRP Fiberglass Statue Design Process

Every FRP statue project begins with the sculpt — either an existing digital file, an existing master in your possession, or a fresh sculpt commissioned through our in-house 3D sculpting team. The six steps below cover a typical first-article program.
    1. 1

      Brief & reference lock

You send character art, IP reference, dimensions, finish reference and intended site (indoor / semi-outdoor / outdoor). We confirm MOQ tier, process family and finish family.

    2. 2

      Digital sculpt or 3D scan

We sculpt in ZBrush, scan your maquette with photogrammetry, or adapt your supplied .obj / .stl. Two rounds of digital revisions are included before moulding.

    3. 3

      Master & mould fabrication

A sculptor's master is 3D-printed or hand-finished in clay, then moulded in plaster, foam or fiberglass. Multiple mould parts for undercuts, bonded joints planned in.

    4. 4

      Lamination & gelcoat

Pigmented gelcoat against the master, then glass fibre + resin laminate, then internal steel or aluminium skeleton bonded in for life size and above.

    5. 5

      Demould, trim & finish

Demould, trim mould seams, fill and sand, then apply the specified finish family (gelcoat colour, paint, patina, metallic leaf, mosaic, faux finish, mirror polish, glow-in-dark).

    6. 6

      QC, crate & ship

Visual QC against approved reference, structural QC on internal frame, custom-built ISPM 15 crate, shipped FOB Shenzhen or CIF your port. On-site install supervisor option.

FRP Fiberglass Statue MOQ by Size Tier

Unlike injection-moulded plastic toys, FRP statue MOQ is governed by sculpt and mould cost rather than per-piece tooling. Below are the four MOQ tiers we operate, with the mould-economics logic behind each.

    Tier 1 · Tabletop
    30 pcs
30-80 cm size. Single master mould shared across the run. Ideal for shelf figurines, counter props, gallery editions.
    Tier 3 · Architectural
    1-2 pcs
300-500 cm atrium or plaza sculpture. Vacuum infusion for structural integrity. Single-piece mould where geometry allows.
    Tier 4 · Monumental
    1 pc
500-800 cm+ monumental work. Bonded multi-part assembly. Public art, gateway signature piece. Engineering drawings included.
Why we quote MOQ 5 pcs on life size rather than 100. The mould for a 200 cm FRP figurative is built once and used across the run — once amortised, the marginal cost of producing piece six versus piece five is small. We hold MOQ at 5 for life size to keep unit price competitive while protecting the mould payback window. For tabletop figurines we hold MOQ at 30 because the gelcoat spray-booth setup and colour-change cycle make single-piece production inefficient.

Care & Maintenance for FRP Fiberglass Statues

FRP is a low-maintenance material but not zero-maintenance. The schedule below splits between indoor pieces (which can run 20+ years on basic cleaning) and outdoor pieces (which need a planned gelcoat refresh every 5-15 years).

    1. Dust & loose debris (weekly)

Soft brush or microfibre cloth; avoid abrasive pads that dull gelcoat sheen. Work top-down so debris does not re-settle on cleaned areas.

    2. Mild wash (monthly, indoor / quarterly outdoor)

Warm water with pH-neutral soap, soft sponge, rinse with clean water. Avoid solvent-based cleaners that attack gelcoat.

    3. Stain treatment (as needed)

Isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth for grease, marker or sticker residue. Test on an inconspicuous area first; do not soak.

    4. Graffiti removal (outdoor, as needed)

Graffiti wipe with a manufacturer-approved gelcoat-safe remover; immediately follow with clear-coat refresh if finish is breached.

    5. Crack or chip inspection (annual)

Visual inspection for hairline cracks, especially at mould seams, mounting points and thin projections (ears, fingers, antennae).

    6. Gelcoat refresh (every 5-15 yr outdoor)

Light wet sand, compound polish, marine-grade wax or fresh clear coat. Schedule shorter for coastal / tropical, longer for temperate.

    7. Repaint of paint-finish pieces (every 5-10 yr)

Hand-painted finishes need refresh on the same cycle as gelcoat refresh; UV breaks down paint binder before it breaks gelcoat.

    8. Internal frame inspection (every 3 yr outdoor)

Check internal steel / aluminium frame for corrosion at weld points, especially around base flange and any water-ingress points.

    9. Anchoring torque check (annual outdoor)

Re-torque base anchor bolts to engineering specification. Ground heave and thermal cycling can loosen fixings.

    10. Winter storage (cold-climate outdoor)

For pieces not rated below -20°C, plan either protective winter wrap or relocation to sheltered storage for the freezing months.

    11. Touch-up kit (provided with every order)

Every FRP statue ships with a 30 ml colour-matched touch-up kit, 50 g filler, application instructions and the gelcoat / paint recipe reference for ten-year re-order matching.

    FAQ

    1
What is an FRP fiberglass statue, and how is it different from a bronze or marble sculpture?
An FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) statue is a sculpted form made by layering glass fibre reinforcement with a thermoset resin (typically polyester or vinyl ester) over a sculptor's master, finished with a pigmented gelcoat. Compared with bronze, an FRP statue weighs roughly one-fifth to one-eighth of an equivalent bronze cast and costs a fraction of the price, while still being able to mimic bronze through a faux patina finish. Compared with marble or stone, FRP is dramatically lighter, far less prone to chipping during transport, and can be produced in colours and surface effects that stone cannot. The trade-off is impact hardness: FRP is more easily dented than bronze, and very thin edges under 2 mm should be designed with a backing.
    2
Can FRP fiberglass statues be used outdoors, and how long do they last outside?
Yes. Outdoor-rated FRP statues are built with an ISO or NPG gelcoat formulated with UV stabilisers, a clear-coat top layer optional, and a vinyl ester skin coat if the climate is humid or coastal. In temperate climates, an outdoor FRP statue typically lasts 10-15 years before the gelcoat needs refurbishment. In harsh coastal or tropical sun environments, plan on a gelcoat refresh every 5-8 years. Indoor or semi-outdoor pieces (covered atrium, mall interior, hotel lobby) easily exceed 20 years with basic cleaning.
    3
What is the maximum size FRP fiberglass statue can be made in one piece?
Single-piece FRP statues can be moulded up to approximately 4 metres tall and 300 kg in weight, limited by workshop crane capacity and mould handling. Beyond that size, we split the sculpture into bonded FRP sub-assemblies with internal flanges and stainless or galvanised steel frames. The largest FRP sculpture we have delivered in bonded segments stands 8.2 metres tall and was shipped in seven crates for on-site reassembly.
    4
How is a damaged FRP fiberglass statue repaired, and can it be done on site?
Small chips and cracks are repaired on site with a polyester filler, sanded smooth, colour-matched with the original gelcoat or topcoat, and clear-coated to match the surrounding sheen. Larger damage (a broken limb, a vandalised panel) is repaired by cutting back to sound laminate, scarf-jointing new glass fibre and resin, and re-finishing. Most repairs take 2-8 hours on site for minor damage, and 1-3 days for major structural repair, with colour match to within Delta E 2.0 of the original.
    5
Does an FRP fiberglass statue fade or yellow in sunlight, and how is it prevented?
Standard orthophthalic gelcoat will yellow noticeably within 2-3 years of direct equatorial sun exposure. UV-stabilised NPG (neopentyl glycol) or ISO (isophthalic) gelcoat extends that to 5-8 years before visible change. For maximum fade resistance, we add an automotive-grade clear coat with UV absorber on top of the colour gelcoat, which can stretch maintenance cycles to 10+ years in temperate climates. Dark colours (especially deep reds and blacks) show fade faster than mid-tone colours and benefit most from the clear coat option.
