What is a custom resin designer art toy?

A custom resin designer art toy is a vacuum-cast solid resin character built as a limited-edition designer collaboration object. The customer is an artist, a designer, a gallery, a brand, a comic publisher or a creative agency that wants a hand-finished, edition-numbered character figure rather than a mass-market toy. The figure is cast in polyurethane resin via silicone mold, hand finished from matte to satin to gloss to metallic and marble, edition-numbered on the base with COA, optional artist signature, brass armature for figures over eight inches.

    Custom design steps

    1. Artist original. The artist brings the original sculpt, file format STL or OBJ, or a physical clay original. Demeng scans and prepares a CNC or SLA master pattern.
    2. Master sign-off. The artist signs the master pattern. Optional resize, finish sampling, brass armature placement review.
    3. Silicone mold and gold sample. Demeng pours the silicone mold from the signed master, pulls the gold sample plus a small batch of three to five pieces, hand finishes per the finish protocol.
    4. Gold sample sign-off. The artist signs the gold sample with the small batch. Optional hand-paint revision, edition numbering placement review, COA wording review.
    5. Edition cast and finish. Demeng vacuum casts the edition in batches, hand finishes each piece, installs brass armature for figures over 8 in, applies edition numbering on the base.
    6. COA and packaging. COA written, signed and dated per piece. Premium collector box with EVA foam insert, brand printed outer carton. Edition log archived for seven years.

Care and maintenance for a designer resin art toy

    • Keep out of direct sun and UV. Resin pigment fades and yellows under direct UV exposure, especially pastel and white. Display away from south-facing windows or use UV-filtering glass.
    • Handle with clean cotton gloves. Bare hands leave fingerprint oils that mark matte resin permanently. Use clean cotton or nitrile gloves when moving the figure.
    • Dust with a soft brush, not a cloth. A soft brush reaches the sculpt texture without scratching the matte surface. Avoid microfiber on matte resin because it leaves streak on weave.
    • Avoid temperatures above 35 C. Resin softens above 35 C and the figure can deform. Keep away from radiators, ovens and south-facing window shelves in summer.
    • Lift with two hands on the body, never on extending elements. The coffee pot in the mouth, the dome on top, the ear tuft — these are anchored by brass armature, but the resin around the anchor can crack under side load. Lift by the body.
    • Never soak in water. The brass armature can corrode at the resin interface over time. Wipe splashes immediately, do not soak or rinse.
    • Keep the COA and edition log. The COA is the provenance anchor for gallery and auction resale. The edition log is the cast date, pull counter and finish protocol reference.
    • For marble and metallic finish: avoid abrasive polish. Marble veins and metallic pigment are at the surface layer of the cast, not throughout. Use a soft damp cloth only, never polish.
    • Rotate the figure quarterly. Long-term static display in the same orientation can warp soft resin under the COG. Rotate 90 degrees every three months.
    • Use the original EVA foam insert for transit. If you take the figure to a gallery event, slide it back into the original EVA foam insert and the printed collector box. The insert is the only tested way to ship.
    • For long-term storage: silica gel pack inside the box. Resin absorbs moisture slowly over years, which can affect matte surface flatness. A small silica gel pack inside the collector box stabilizes humidity.

    FAQ

    1
What is the typical workflow for an artist collaboration project?
Six steps. Step one artist brings original sculpt, file format STL OBJ or physical clay original. Step two Demeng scans and prepares CNC or SLA master pattern, two to five working days. Step three artist signs the master, optional resize or finish sampling. Step four Demeng makes silicone mold and pulls the gold sample, artist signs the gold sample, optional hand-paint revision. Step five vacuum cast in edition batch, hand finished per the finish protocol, brass armature installed for figures over eight inches. Step six numbered edition, COA written and signed, packed in premium collector box with EVA foam insert, shipped. Total lead time 54 to 75 days door to door including sea freight.
    2
What finish options do you offer for designer resin art toys?
Eight finish families that can be mixed across a single edition. Matte is the default flat finish, hides small skin marks, reads modern. Satin is a low gloss halfway between matte and gloss. High-gloss clear coat reads as wet plastic, expensive looking. Metallic pigment gives a metal sheen without being a real metal figure, used for surreal pop art and chrome face. Marble effect uses cast-in pigment veins that look like real stone, used for 12 to 16 in gallery hero. Gradient cast-in color reads as two-tone with no paint layer, used for limited edition 30 to 80 pieces. Solid cast-in color reads as one color throughout, used for 200 plus pieces. Artist-custom finish like flocked velvet or specialty glaze by quote. Pantone match is plus or minus 2 Delta E on flat tones and plus or minus 3 on metallic.
    3
How do you control quality across an edition of 30 to 200 pieces?
Three checkpoints. Master pattern sign-off is the first, before silicone mold is poured the artist signs the CNC or SLA master. Gold sample sign-off is the second, after the first cast and paint batch the artist signs the gold sample with a small batch of three to five pieces, this becomes the reference. Edition pull is the third, every silicone mold has a pull counter, first mid and last cast of every pull are compared to the gold sample under raking light. Drift above the agreed tolerance is culled rather than downgraded. Brass armature is added for figures over eight inches to prevent shipping fracture, with the armature visible in the base cavity only. Edition numbering is engraved or pad printed on the base, COA printed, photograph archived for seven years.
    4
What certificates and tests apply to a designer resin art toy?
Three paths depending on access level. If the figure sits on a desk or shelf with adult-only access and is sold as adult collectible, no toy directive applies, the figure is a decorative object. If the figure is sold in retail and may be reached by children, full toy compliance: CE, EN71 part 1, 2 and 3, ASTM F963, CPSIA tracking label and CPC, CCPSA. If the figure ships to California, Prop 65 statement on file. Demeng Toy is the manufacturer of record and holds the Declaration of Conformity for ten years. Edition numbering and COA record are kept for seven years for the artist. Brass armature installation record is kept for every figure over eight inches, which matters for shipping insurance claims.
    5
Can the figure use brass armature or other internal reinforcement for shipping?
Yes and we recommend it for figures over eight inches. Brass wire 1.5 to 3 mm is cast into the resin during vacuum casting, anchored at the base and rising through the body, hidden inside the figure. For figures over 14 inches a stainless steel internal frame is welded separately and the resin is cast around it. For figures with extending elements like a coffee pot in the open mouth or a dome on top, brass pin armature extends into the element to prevent shipping fracture. The armature is visible only when the figure is unpacked and the base cavity is exposed. Demeng Toy logs the armature spec with the figure SKU so a future reprint uses the same internal skeleton.
