What Is a Custom PVC Figure for Adult Collectors ?

Custom PVC adult collectible figures are 14+/15+ display pieces. Sold to collectors, not as regular toys, they are closed numbered editions. Age rating greatly impacts cost and design, while run size decides mold options.

Age grading is an engineering decision, not just paperwork. 15+ items skip children’s toy safety tests, enabling sharp tips, thin details and heavy bases. But we must meet stricter finishing standards: parting line under 0.15mm, crisp paint lines, consistent gloss, color Delta E ≤1.5, and supporting documents for retailers.

Limited edition cost comes down to simple math: mold cost divided by quantity. Hardened steel molds suit large runs, while small batches like 150 units raise per-piece price sharply. Run size determines if we use silicone, CNC aluminum or steel molds. Unnumbered 5,000-piece runs are not verifiable limited editions.

Two main risks for PVC collectibles:

    1. Plasticizer migration. Normal PVC turns sticky over time, sticks to other items and damages shelf finishes. We use non-migrating plasticizer + barrier lacquer. Never store figures in PVC bags.
    2. Paint scuffing and UV fading on touched or sunlit areas. Proper coating and care instructions prevent this.

    Safety Standards & Certifications

    Certificate / StandardRegionWhat it covers
EN 71-3EUMigration of certain elements from coatings. We test this on every adult collector run as a baseline even where the wider EN 71 file is out of scope, because surface chemistry is the one thing that stays with a figure for twenty years
ASTM F963-23USAUS toy safety specification, applied here as a reference standard to the surface coating and the physical build of an adult piece
CPSIA (lead & phthalates)USALead and phthalate limits plus the permanent tracking label. Directly relevant on PVC, because the plasticizer system that keeps it flexible is exactly what this test looks at
California Prop 65USA (CA)Chemical warning compliance for pigments, lacquers and any metal base insert or nameplate
REACH SVHC & Annex XVIIEURestricted substances across the PVC compound, the lacquer system and metal parts, including the phthalate restrictions that drive plasticizer choice
RoHSEUApplies where the piece carries a light-up element or an illuminated base
EN 1811 (nickel release)EURequired where an exposed metal part can contact skin, or where a metal base insert, clasp or fastener is present
EN 71-1 / EN 71-2 / CE — conditional scope noteEUNot required for a correctly age-graded 15+ collector piece that is never marketed to children; we document the age-grading rationale and issue the CE and EN 71 pack on request when a retail buyer asks for it. Where a run is also sold as family-safe, full EN 71-1 mechanical and EN 71-2 flammability testing applies and we quote it as a separate line
Age Grading & Not-a-Toy Labeling RecordGlobalThe documented age-grading rationale, the approved warning text on packaging, and control of marketing language. This is the file that keeps the child-safety exemption defensible if a buyer or a regulator asks
Edition & Numbering Integrity RecordGlobalDeclared edition size on file before tooling, the serial log of every number issued, records of destroyed or skipped numbers, and the written no reprint commitment. Archived for seven years

    Care & Maintenance

    • Never let two PVC figures touch in storage or on a shelf. Plasticizer migrates to the surface over time and PVC-on-PVC contact will bond or transfer a mark that cannot be polished out. Keep 3-5 mm of air between pieces, or separate them with a felt pad or an acrylic riser.
    • Store in polyethylene or acid-free tissue, never in PVC bags, vinyl pouches or cling film. The same migration problem works in reverse - a PVC bag will mark your figure, and the mark usually shows up months later.
    • Keep the piece out of direct sunlight and away from display lighting that runs hot. UV fades pigment and yellows pale PVC, and a figure under a constant spot light will show a shading difference within a season or two.
    • Dust with a dry soft brush or a photographic blower, not a cloth. Rubbing a cloth across matte paint burnishes it glossy and leaves a visible patch, and matte finishes cannot be spot-repaired.
    • Do not use alcohol, ammonia, acetone, nail polish remover or household cleaner on any painted surface. Use lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap on a microfiber cloth for the base only, then dry it immediately.
    • Handle the figure by the base or the torso, not by thin protrusions. Hair strands, antennae, weapon tips and capes are strong in compression and weak in bending, and an adult collector piece is allowed to have all of them.
    • Do not open the piece to check the joint or the base insert. Repeated re-assembly wears the socket fit, and a loose joint is the most common single reason a numbered piece loses value.
    • Keep the certificate with the piece but not touching it. The serial record and the certificate are what make the edition verifiable at resale, and ink or foil left against a matte base can transfer.
    • Display between 40 and 60 percent relative humidity and below 40 °C. PVC softens near 60 °C and can creep under its own weight above 45 °C, so an attic, a car boot or a shelf directly above a radiator is a real risk for a heavy piece.
    • On a weighted base, check once a year that the felt pad is still flat and intact. A compressed or missing pad is what lets a base scratch a glass or lacquered shelf.
    • If the piece ships with a riser or display stand, use the threaded insert rather than leaning the figure against something. Leaning on a thin part is how limited pieces collect stress marks.

    Production Process & Timeline

The production cycle of this custom toy is about 2-3 months. The process is divided into 3 core stages, with the steps and timeframes for each stage as follows:
    1. Pre-design & Sampling Stage

      Including 2D design, 3D modeling, 3D printed sample, and colorful prototype production, taking 5-11 days in total;
    2. Mold & Mass Production Preparation Stage

      Including mold solution finalization, mold making, and mass production, taking 35-42 days in total;
    3. Post-processing & Delivery Stage

Including color painting, assembling, Q-C (quality control), packaging, and delivery, taking 14-22 days in total.

    FAQ

    1
Does the limited edition label change how the figure is produced?
Yes, more than it changes the price. Edition size is arithmetic before it is prestige: tooling cost per unit is the mold cost divided by the edition size. A steel injection mold is the right tool at 2,500 pieces and the wrong tool at 150, where its cost has to be spread over 150 units and dominates the price. That is why we quote the tooling route against your edition size, cast silicone or an aluminum bridge tool for micro runs and hardened steel multi cavity above roughly 2,500, and why a 150 piece edition can cost twice a 1,500 piece edition per unit.
    2
Why do PVC figures get sticky and mark each other, and can you stop it?
That is plasticizer migration, and it is normal for ordinary PVC. Plasticizer migrates to the surface over years, which makes a piece tacky; two PVC pieces in contact will bond or transfer a mark, and a PVC figure resting on a lacquered shelf can lift the finish. We specify a non migrating plasticizer system and finish with a barrier lacquer coat that blocks the surface migration path, and we tell clients to store pieces in polyethylene rather than PVC bags. No supplier can promise zero migration forever, but a proper compound and barrier coat push the problem out by many years.
    3
Can I have sharp points, thin hair strands or a fragile pose?
On an adult collector piece, usually yes, and that is one of the real benefits of age grading. A child safety file rules out sharp points, thin protrusions that could puncture, and parts that could break into small pieces; those rules do not apply to a correctly age graded 15+ piece that is never marketed to children. We still engineer for transit, because a broken strand out of the box is a defect regardless of who holds it, so thin parts get independent pockets in the tray and carry no load.
    4
Which material is better for a limited edition, PVC or cast resin?
It depends on the edition size. Cast polyurethane resin is the affordable route for a 50 to 300 piece micro run, because a silicone block mold costs a fraction of a steel tool and captures very fine detail. Specialty PVC is the better route from roughly 250 pieces upward, for a reason that matters specifically to a numbered edition: repeatability. A silicone mold wears and cast parts drift slightly across the run, so piece 400 is not dimensionally identical to piece 012. Injection molded PVC parts are the same at piece 1 and piece 10,000, which is exactly what a collector comparing two pieces of the same edition will notice.
    5
What are the MOQ, sample time and total lead time?
MOQ is 100 pieces per design, and for a numbered edition the practical floor is around 250 pieces, because below that the tooling amortization usually exceeds the part cost. A painted prototype takes 7 working days, and the design and sampling stage runs 5-11 days. Tooling and mass production preparation take 35-42 days, then painting, assembly, QC, numbering and packing take 14-22 days, for 54-75 days in total, or about 2-3 months, with a first order typically around 60 days. Numbering and the certificate happen inside the final stage, after QC. Sea freight is 25-40 days and air freight 3-5 days.
