A custom PVC bobblehead figure is a rigid PVC figure whose head is a separate molding mounted on an internal spring pivot, giving the signature wobbly nod. The body, limbs and base are injection molded from your character or likeness; the head is molded as its own shell, weighed, drilled for the pivot socket, then assembled onto the spring and seated into the neck opening. Painting is by hand, airbrush and pad print, with decals for fine livery and sponsor marks.
Two engineering problems define this category, and they pull against each other. The first is the wobble mechanism — the spring has to be stiff enough to hold a heavy head upright and loose enough to nod on a light touch, then return to vertical every time. The second is center of gravity — a head that is 40-55% of the total height carries most of the mass high up, so the base must be weighted and wide enough that the figure self-rights instead of tipping. Get the spring right and the figure feels alive; get the base wrong and it falls over on the shelf.
| Size band | Head proportion | Weighted base | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5-4 inch mini promo (90-100 mm) | Head about 40% of height | Molded hollow base, light 15-20 g insert | Convention giveaways, event/press gifts, low-cost fan merchandise |
| 6 inch classic desk (150-155 mm) | Head 45-50% of height | Steel washer 25-35 g or zinc alloy insert | The category standard — driver figures, anime icons, desk gifts |
| 7-8 inch premium hero (180-205 mm) | Head 50-55% of height | Zinc alloy 40-60 g plus wider footprint | Photo-personalized likenesses, retail hero SKUs, limited drops |
| 10-12 inch jumbo display (250-305 mm) | Head up to 55%, often two-piece body | Loaded resin core 120-250 g, trophy-style plinth | Club trophies, dealership and lobby display, high-value collector editions |
| Material route | Hand feel & weight | Best for | Detail ceiling | Unit band (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ⭐ Rigid injection PVC head + body, weighted composite base (recommended · page standard material) | Light, tough, slightly glossy; snap-fitting head shell that holds crisp molded detail | Motorsport and anime bobbleheads, desk gifts, bulk fan merchandise, photo-personalized runs | High — beard strands, helmet vents, hair clumps, uniform folds and molded patches all survive | $2.20-9.50 |
| Soft vinyl (roto-cast) head and body | Softer to the touch, matte, warmer; head shell lighter so it wobbles more freely | Retro Japanese-style bobble figures, kaiju and mascot characters, soft-touch gifts | Medium — gentler surface, softer edges, best with bold shapes rather than fine engraving | $3.80-11.00 |
| Full polyresin (heavyweight collector) | Heavy and dense, cool to the touch, cold-cast stone feel | Upscale club trophies, 10-12 inch jumbo display pieces, award-style gifts | Very high — the finest surface detail and sharpest undercuts of any route | $9.00-24.00 |
| ABS or PP economy shell | Hard, thin, hollow-sounding; cheapest possible construction | Very high volume promotional giveaways with a short retail life | Low — think molded graphics, thick sections and simple two-color paint | $1.10-2.40 |
| Plush or mixed-media bobble hybrid | Soft textile body with a molded PVC head on the spring — novelty contrast | Children's ranges, character-mascot gifts, book and TV tie-ins | Medium on the head, print-driven on the body (embroidered or sublimated) | $3.00-8.0 |
| Process step | What we do | Result on the shelf | When to choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Likeness sculpting & photo-to-model head | ZBrush sculpt built from reference sheets or front/side/3-quarter photographs; hair, beard, glasses, helmet and uniform direction modeled, not painted on | A recognizable face and a helmet that reads as a helmet, not a smooth dome | Any real-person likeness, driver, employee or club legend |
| Head proportion & balance design | Head-to-body ratio set as a spec, head shell wall thickness and internal boss modeled for the pivot, base footprint sized against predicted head mass | Figure stands firm, does not tip when the head is pushed, self-rights | Every bobblehead — this is what separates a real product from a wobbling ornament |
| Pivot socket & spring retention engineering | Neck socket depth 8-12 mm, retention by snap ring, two-part epoxy or ultrasonic staking; spring grade, gauge and coil count specified against head mass | Head cannot be pulled off by hand and does not loosen over a year of desk use | All child-safe programs; mandatory for anything sold below ages 14+ |
| Steel injection tooling & mass production prep | Mold solution finalized, cavity and core cut, parting line and gate position optimized for the head shell and base | Repeatable parts across the whole run, consistent neck opening, minimal flash | Runs of 1,000+ or any program expected to re-order the same sculpt |
| PVC molding of head, body and base | In-house compounding and injection molding of body, limbs, head shell and base; color matched to Pantone before paint | Strong, fade-resistant color with sharp molded patches, vents and plaques | Standard route for all PVC bobblehead programs |
| Base weighting & tilt test | Steel washer, zinc alloy or loaded resin insert fitted and locked; sample tilted 15 degrees and must self-right, plus packing drop test | The figure survives a desk nudge instead of falling flat | All 6 inch and larger pieces; essential for jumbo display |
| Hand-paint, airbrush & pad-print finishing | Hand-painted base coats, airbrush shading on hair, beard and fabric, pad-printed eyes and logos, decals for livery and sponsor marks, then gloss or matte clear coat | Vibrant satin or gloss colors with real depth in the beard, hair and uniform folds | Racing liveries, anime color schemes, any likeness work |
| Head cradle packaging & QC | Head immobilized in a molded insert or foam cradle, base locked into the tray, QC on wobble cycles, paint coverage, pivot tension and torque | Arrives upright and nodding — the failure most competitor shipments show | Every order, and non-negotiable for jumbo or heavy-head designs |
